“Blue you feel when it all goes wrong”
Words: Megan Natasha Ross
In our industry there is colour theory: hex codes and CMYK, RGB (and where a spot colour might go awry during print). There are branding guidelines and evocations of colour in writing, in the emotional weight of a single hue woven into our work, our art, our lives.
And so, in line with our commitment to the natural world around us, to colour and wildlife, fauna and flora alike, we share a short meditation on blue.
Meditation on Blue
Blue of Klein,
Blue of Maggie Nelson,
Blue of sky,
Blue of that ’90s song,
Blue you feel when it all goes wrong,
Blue the moon when the sky is a song;
Blue of God (a most ancient shade),
Blue of the cosmos (a one true love),
Blue of winged messenger and berry (a forever, an eternity);
An unending nothingness, true otherness. Blue is depth, is a promise, is love.
What is blue to you?
As a concept, as a theme, as an anchor?
The 2026 WWF Living Planet Report shows that global wildlife populations have collapsed by an average of 73%.
Our text forms part of a larger body of work that seeks to appreciate our beingness in nature, and as nature.
Why do we start a business newsletter with a meditation on the colour blue? Because an algorithm can give you the hex code for blue; AI can even provide the complementary shade to offset your chosen hue (on eyelid, on choice of curtain fabric) but it cannot evoke the feeling of blue. It can never become blue.
Every Founder and Her Aunty is Googling “How to stop the scroll?”
And yet, they're outsourcing their most valuable asset: their writing.
While it’s commonplace — albeit virtually expected — to be automating mundane and rote tasks, relinquishing control over your intellectual property, and the words being used to entice or allure your audience, isn’t.
For organisations and founders who are shoving their writers out the back door, the result is a smorgasbord of Claude, ChatGPT and Googles’ best. A sea of generic, predictable content that everyone scrolls right past (or tags as 'AI slop'), or screenshots for the WhatsApp group.
So what are the pioneers doing? The avant-garde? The thinkers, the visionaries?
They’re Hiring Writers
Look at Moncler. While their competitors opted for AI-generated product descriptions, they turned to writers, transforming their entire e-commerce platform into a digital magazine by hiring the exact editorial talent that could weave narrative into commerce. The ‘gamble’ worked: Moncler won Fast Company’s 2026 Innovation by Design Award, proving that in an age of hurried automation, 'editorial' is the ultimate luxury.
Whether organisation or individual, the forward-thinkers know that when 'everybody' can write with an LLM, the actual writer becomes the premium asset. Which is a fairly crucial asset when 72% of Gen Z consumers, for instance, are likely to actively ‘punish’ a brand (by unfollowing, unsubscribing or even boycotting) after spotting AI-generated marketing.
Writers Who Are Journalists, Authors and Yes, Even Poets
They're not firing them, that’s for sure.
The latest 2026 market data proves it—while AI-generated articles flood the internet, 86% of the content that actually ranks on page one of Google is human-written, and B2B buyers trust human thought leadership 64% more than generic marketing collateral.
A human command of language, a propensity for poetics, and turns of phrase that are less Claude and more Monet cannot be automated. And that differentiation is exactly what sets a brand (or individual, or large organisation, or even exhibition, concert or book release) apart.
If you want what you’re doing to actually stand out in the doomscroll, standard marketing copy won't cut it. To truly connect with people, your narrative needs two things: genuine depth and a clear commercial strategy.
Usually, you're forced to choose. You get poetic writing that doesn't drive results, or dry corporate text that nobody wants to read.
